Colours to avoid in spring family photos

During the spring I recommend avoiding bold colours, and black. If you think about the soft colour palette that mother nature provides in the spring, bright, bold colours and black will overpower that softness and mean that we see clothes before people.

Earth tones are a great choice for a spring photoshoot as they complement the natural beauty of the landscape. Think cream, muted brown, golden yellow, and soft pink.

CLASSIC PASTELS

Nothing says spring like pastels—some of the most common being light and bright shades of pink, purple, green, yellow, and blue. These pastel colors instantly remind me of Easter eggs as well as tulips and other blooming flowers.

Choose the Right Color for You

Sam recommends navy blue, burgundy, or muted neutral tones if you aren't sure. Avoid white, black, or reds.

DON'T: Always look at the camera

The BEST photos, the ones that make my clients cry, are always the unposed photos. Those moments in between setups when everyone is interacting with each other, having fun and showing love. Your family photography session is not about standing, posing and looking at the camera.

Stick to solid, muted colors–earthy tones, muted gem tones, monochrome, beige, and taupe are great examples. Low contrast outfits (if your shirt is pure white, go for lighter color bottom pieces.) Flatter your figure–don't wear clothes that are entirely too tight or loose, or clothes that accentuate your insecurities.

Pick neutral colors and solids or simple patterns that go well together, but don't match. Neutral, soft tones. Keep it natural with colors like khaki, cream, blush, denim, sage green, grey, cream, lavender, etc. Bright & neon colors give a strange looking tint to the skin & aren't flattering.

True Spring's best colours are usually warm greens, yellows, orangey reds, very peachy pinks and every shade of light brown from tan to palest beige. This is the softest and lightest of the Spring colours - the intensity and saturation of those bolder Spring colours is really dialled down.

Above all, avoid black or very dark colors as they will blend into the black background. These bright colors draw attention away from their face and become the image's primary focus. Instead, choose subdued hues like pastels, jewel tones, earthy tones, neutrals, and gentle shades of blue, green, or pink.

Jeans are the timeless choice and they're great for fun, casual pictures because they are flattering and don't show wrinkles or panty lines. Lighter shirts on top give the pictures a more casual and bright look. Pastels are also usually appealing because they enhance natural skin tones.
