Ranch Pretzels - Lower Sodium Snack with Flavor

This easy ranch pretzel recipe starts with unsalted pretzels. I can't stand a plain unsalted pretzel, but most salted ones are way too salty and I end out picking off salt crystals. In this recipe dry ranch seasoning mix is coated on the pretzels to give them yummy ranch flavor and just a touch of salt. It's so easy to flavor your snacks with a ranch packet, or make your own salad dressing mix.

If reducing sodium is not a concern for you simply use the regular salted pretzels. There are no changes needed to the ranch pretzels recipe.

Another healthy snack you may want to try is my Air Fryer Chickpeas recipe. Crunchy, low fat and fiber rich.

Types of Pretzels

While I chose small pretzels in a typical twisted form, any shape will do. Bites, braids and seasonal shapes all work. Broken up rods are particularly good, in that the oil and seasoning will really stick to the open edges.

Ranch Seasoned Pretzels

I have coated the pretzels with my own homemade Ranch Seasoning mix. The amount of dry dressing used is equivalent to a packet of store bought Hidden Valley Ranch dressing mix. So you can use that is you prefer. Of course, you will need to adjust the nutrition data if you go that route.

Ingredients You'll Need for the Ranch Pretzels Recipe:

Yes, just three simple ingredients in this easy to make delicious snack recipe!

Ranch Pretzels Recipe (4)
  • 10-12 ounce bag of Pretzel Twists, unsalted - Swap the mini pretzels for pretzel sticks or salted if you want. I would not get large pretzels though, as they would be difficult to toss in the seasoning.
  • 3 tablespoons avocado oil or olive oil - As mentioned, melted butter or ghee can be used. Actually, pretty much any vegetable oil can be. I personally prefer to use avocado oil in most of my cooking.
  • 2 tablespoons of homemade Ranch Seasoning mix - Yes, you can use store bought Hidden Valley Ranch if you insist...lol. One packet of Hidden Valley would be equivalent to the amount used in the recipe. I do encourage you to make your own ranch dressing mix though. It's easy and worth it

Supplies

  • Baking or cookie sheet
  • large bowl
  • Parchment paper is recommended, but not required.

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 275 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. If you don't have any, just skip it. The liner only makes for easier clean-up.

Ranch Pretzels Recipe (5)

Dump the bag of pretzels in a large mixing bowl. Take the oil and pour over pretzels, then stir to mix or toss together with your hands to coat.

Ranch Pretzels Recipe (6)

Sprinkle the seasoning over the coated pretzels a bit at a time to avoid clumps, while you mix them together with a spatula or hand toss. Dump in a gallon size bag and shake if you prefer.

Now pour the coated pretzels on your prepared sheet pan and spread the pretzels around. Don't worry if a few lay on top.

Bake for 15 minutes in your preheated oven. Remove from oven and let cool completely to room temperature before serving the pretzels.

Variations of the Recipe

As I mentioned, you should feel free to use salted pretzels if you like. There are several other ways to zing these ranch pretzels up more beyond ranch salad dressing mix. See what you can do with simple ingredients additions.

  • Try adding extra garlic powder into the seasoning for Garlic Ranch Pretzels. A ½ teaspoon garlic powder should be plenty to add to the batch.
  • For a Spicy Ranch Pretzels snack, add a ¼ teaspoon of cayenne pepper into the mixture.
  • There is no gluten in the homemade dry ranch dressing, so if you buy gluten free pretzels the snack will be gluten free.
  • If you are a fan of dill weed as I am, add an extra teaspoon of dried dill weed in with the coating.
  • While I've opted for healthy fats from avocado or olive oil in this recipe, melted butter can also be used to make the seasoned pretzels. Vegetable or canola oil are fine if you prefer.

Storing the Ranch Pretzels

Simply put the seasoned pretzels in an airtight container or sealed plastic bags with air pushed out before closing. They will last at least a week.

Seasoned Pretzels Variations

While I am a huge fan of Ranch flavored pretzels, there are plenty of other options you can make other snack recipes with the same easy method.

  • Try using lemon pepper, Cajun seasoning or Pumpkin pie spice on a batch of pretzels. Even onion powder or garlic powder alone (or with grated Parmesan cheese) are tasty choices.
  • Oyster crackers, saltines or broken up large pretzel rods can also be seasoned this way.

Dips for your Pretzels

Here are a few easy dips to team up with your easy ranch pretzels. All are great for game day, parties and holidays.

  • Roasted Red Pepper Ranch Dip
  • Avocado Lime Ranch
  • Creamy French Onion Dip
