Christmas is swinging and the holiday season is my favourite time of year! During the holidays I find myself doing lots of baking and making lots of DIY projects to give away like candles.
Of course, I have been loving candy cane and peppermint flavours in my food so I knew I needed to make mini candy cane cookies for my friends at The Grumpy Olive!
I love using candy cane in my baked goods because the texture is super fun to bite and chew! I made a version of Chocolatey Candy Cane cookies last year that was addictive and also really quick and easy!
Have you ever made a baked good with crushed candy canes in them? What’s your favourite way candy canes?

Here is how to make Mini Candy Cane Cookies
Where can I find these ingredients?
Everything needed to make these mini candy cane cookies can be found in your local grocery stores. I actually had such a hard time finding candy canes this early in the year! I almost gave up on this guest post and was going to make something else because I just couldn’t find candy canes early but I walked into my local dollar store and found some!
If you’re a baker, you’ll already have most of these ingredients at home but they are pretty common ingredients you’d use in a lot of other recipes! Candy canes were the only thing that was a little tough to find.
What is in this recipe?
You’ll need the following ingredients to make these super mini candy cane cookies:
- All-Purpose Flour
- Baking Powder
- Granulated Sugar
- Salt
- Vanilla Extract
- Egg
- Unsalted Butter
- Candy Canes
What equipment do I need?
These mini candy cane cookies recipe uses the oven to bake the cookies. I recipe tested this not one not two but three times! I used my beautiful KitchenAid stand mixer for these but you can most definitely use an electric hand mixer or even whip it up by hand. Just make sure that the butter is completely softened so you will need to account for time and take it out early.
You’ll need the standard things for baking like a baking tray and parchment paper. If you want all the cookies to be the same shape and size, I recommend using a cookie scoop!
You’ll most likely need to crush your candy canes and I simply just put it in a ziplock and crush them up with a wood spoon. You zip up the ziplock and just lightly hit the candy canes with a spoon.
What are the steps to prepare?
The steps needed to prepare these mini candy cane cookies are:
- Mix
- Combine
- Scoop
- Bake
- Cool and Enjoy!
Can I sub anything out?
These mini candy cane cookies recipe is pretty much a standard white cookie dough base with added crushed candy canes in them so there isn’t much to substitute out. You can of course add in toppings like Christmas sprinkles or some nuts if you like cookies with nuts in them!
I made an even easier version of this cookie using cake box mix last year that’s chocolatey which is awesome too! You can check out my post on Chocolatey Candy Cane Cookies on my blog!
What does it taste like?
Oh man, if you love peppermint mochas or peppermint hot chocolates then this is the cookie for you! The cookie overall is not too sweet then you get that candy cane/peppermint flavour and the candy texture is so cool because it’s super crunchy!
I love having a few of these with a piping hot cup of coffee!
How long does it keep for?
These mini candy cane cookies keep for a long time! I made a huge batch and froze them after they’ve fully cooled and they were awesome after defrosting one or two to enjoy for a few hours.
They are of course delicious when they are fresh but I’ve left them sitting on the container in an airtight container for a week and they still keep the same taste and texture which is nice!
In summary, up to a week on the countertop in an airtight container and up to a month/ month in a half in the freezer. Just defrost it at room temperature for at least 4 hours before serving/eating!
What goes with these easy mini candy cane cookies?
These mini candy cane cookies are an amazing holiday cookie to bake and give to others! You can have these mini candy cane cookies:
- With a hot cup of Coffee
- With a hot cup of Tea
- On a Christmas Treat Board
- On Christmas Dinner Dessert Table
- By Itself
What are other variations of mini candy cane cookies?
I love candy canes in these cookies but you can absolutely swap out the candy cane and put in:
- Sprinkles
- Chocolate Chips
- M&M’s
- Oreo Chunks
- Marshmallows
- Kit Kat
- Nuts – walnuts, pecans, macadamia, almonds
Any other notes?
Just a few things to note for these mini candy cane cookies recipe:
Super important to not fold in the candy canes too early or all the colour will bleed out into the dough! This is more presentation and vanity note but if you want everything to swirl together then add in your candy canes early. If you want the candy canes to peek out then fold at the very very end.
