    Heatwave News Highlights: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘red alert’ warning for multiple states in north India due to the ongoing heatwave conditions and soaring temperatures in the area. It is expected that the maximum temperatures in these states will hit 48 degrees Celsius in the ongoing week, in view of the weather forecast issued by the MeT department....Read More

    IMD has issued a red alert for heatwave in northern Indian cities such as Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Rajasthan and western Uttar Pradesh. The weather agencies predicted severe heatwave conditions over these states for the next five days. This comes just as Delhi as well as multiple seats in UP and Haryana are gearing up for the sixth phase of the Lok Sabha election 2024, on Saturday. It is expected that the maximum temperature on May 25 will touch 47 degrees Celsius across Delhi NCR areas on polling day.

    Speaking to ANI on Tuesday, senior IMD scientist Naresh Kumar said, "Temperatures are currently above normal across North West India and we had issued a red alert for the region over the past 2-3 days. With regard to a state-wise forecast, we have issued a red alert in Rajasthan for the next five days. The maximum temperature is likely to inch further up from 45°C and settle at 47°C."

    "In Punjab and Haryana, maximum temperatures have registered a marginal drop due to a prevailing western disturbance but they will increase gradually hereafter by 2 to 3 degrees. we have already issued a 'red alert' for these two states. In neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, we have issued a red alert for the next five days and an orange alert for northern parts of Madhya Pradesh," Kumar told ANI.

    Shah Rukh Khan's wife Gauri Khan visited him at KD Hospital in Ahmedabad after the actor suffered dehydration and heat stroke on Wednesday.

    Brutal heat in large parts of India; temperatures set to rise further, says IMD

    The blistering heat sweeping across large swathes of India continued unabated on Wednesday, with the mercury surging to 48 degrees Celsius in Rajasthan's Barmer, the highest temperature recorded in the country this year so far.

    Water levels in the Delhi stretch of the Yamuna River dropped amid the sweltering heat, affecting water supply.

    The city also saw power demand reaching a record 8,000 megawatts, with air conditioners, coolers, and refrigerators in homes and offices running at full throttle.

    Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal has lauded the uninterrupted power supply amid the record demand as a great achievement for the people of Delhi.

    “On the other hand, there are BJP-ruled states like UP, Haryana, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, where there have been power cuts of 10-12 hours in the last 2-3 days,” the AAP supremo posted on X in Hindi.

    Heatwave grips Rajasthan, Barmer hottest at 48 deg C

    Rajasthan continued to suffer from extreme heat, with Barmer recording the highest temperature at 48 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.

    In response, the state government canceled the leave of all divisional commissioners, additional divisional commissioners, district collectors, additional district collectors, and sub-divisional officers until further notice.

    Health authorities had already canceled the leave of all doctors and paramedical staff in government hospitals due to the soaring temperatures.

    The maximum temperatures recorded were 48 degrees in Barmer, 47.8 degrees in Phalodi, 47.6 degrees in Fatehpur (Sikar), 47.5 degrees in Churu, 47.2 degrees in Jalore and Jaisalmer, and 47.1 degrees Celsius in Vanasthali (Tonk).

    Delhi swelters as max temperature reaches 43.4 deg C

    Delhi's maximum temperature on Wednesday hit 43.4 degrees Celsius, three degrees above the seasonal average, and stayed in the 'Yellow' alert zone, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The IMD warned that there is a high risk of heat-related illnesses and heat stroke for people of all ages, especially infants, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses.

    Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan was admitted to K D Hospital in Ahmedabad on Wednesday after suffering from a heat stroke, according to police. Khan was in Ahmedabad on Tuesday to attend an IPL match of his team, Kolkata Knight Riders, at the Narendra Modi Stadium. "Actor Shah Rukh Khan was admitted to K D Hospital after suffering from a heat stroke," said Ahmedabad (Rural) Superintendent of Police Om Prakash Jat.

    Govt successfully met peak power demand in Delhi without outages: Atishi

    On Wednesday, Delhi's Power Minister Atishi announced that the city government successfully handled the peak power demand of 7,717 MW on May 21 without any power cuts. She emphasized that even if the demand reaches 8,000 MW in the upcoming months, they will take necessary steps to meet it.

    According to the State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC) in Delhi, the real-time data showed that the city's peak demand broke all previous records, reaching 7,717 MW at 3:33 pm.

    Officials stated that Delhi's previous highest peak power demand was recorded at 7,695 MW on June 29, 2022.

    Heatwave News LIVE: Rajasthan cancels dostors' leave amid rising temperatures

    The health authorities in Rajasthan have canceled leave for all doctors and paramedical staff in government hospitals due to the rising temperatures in the state.

    Pilani (Jhunjhunu) recorded the highest daytime temperature at 47.2 degrees Celsius, with high nighttime temperatures ranging from 27.7 degrees (Bhilwara) to 34 degrees (Jaisalmer).

    The Meteorological Department predicts that the heatwave will persist for the next few days, with severe conditions expected in Jodhpur, Bikaner divisions, and the Shekhawati region.
