There are over 49 varieties of dahlias. Here are just a few of my favorites.
Dinner Plate dahlias
Dinner Plate dahlias: These flowers are the most significant type of dahlia, with flowers reaching up to 12 inches in diameter. They are typically double-flowered, with petals that curl backward.
Pompon dahlias
Pompon Dahlias: These dahlias have small, round flowers that resemble pompons. They are typically single-flowered, with petals that are tightly clustered together.
Cactus dahlias
Cactus Dahlias: These dahlias have long, narrow petals that curl backward or forward, giving them a cactus-like appearance. They are typically double-flowered, with petals that are in bright colors.
Ball Dahlias
Ball Dahlias: These dahlias have round flowers slightly larger than pompon dahlias. They are typically double-flowered, with petals that are loosely arranged.
Anemone Dahlias
Anemone Dahlias: These dahlias have flowers that resemble anemones. They are typically single-flowered, with petals arranged in a single row around a central disk.

- Use a variety of textures. The different textures of the flowers will add interest and dimension to your arrangement. For example, you can combine dinner plate dahlias with smooth petals and Cactus dahlias with long, skinny petals.
- Use a variety of heights. This will create a more dynamic and interesting arrangement. You can use different heights of flowers by using different-sized vases or by placing some flowers in front of others.
- Use a variety of colors. This will create a more visually appealing arrangement. You can use complementary colors or monochromatic colors. Mix black dahlias with pink dahlias.
- Use a focal point. This is the main attraction of your arrangement (the Dinner Plate Dahlia is perfect for this). It could be a single flower, a group of flowers, or a piece of greenery.
- Use a vase or container that complements the flowers. The vase or container should complement the colors and shapes of the flowers. You can use a simple, clear vase or a few vases together. Try using something not meant to be a vase, like a teacup, mason jar, or a pretty pitcher from the kitchen.

Ten of my favorite dahlia arrangements
1. All-white dahlia arrangement

The pure white petals of the dahlias will create a sense of serenity and peace in any room. You can use a variety of dahlias in this arrangement, including Pompon Dahlias and Ball Dahlias. I like to use several small vases and put single stems in them at different heights.
2. A basket full of dahlias
I must admit, there’s nothing quite like picking dahlias from the garden and arranging them in a basket.
The rustic charm of the basket is a perfect complement to the vibrant colors of the flowers. However, fresh-cut dahlias won’t last long without water, so add them to a short vase or use flower vials to keep them hydrated.
3. Monochromatic dahlia flower arrangements
A single-stem vase of all-red dahlias is a bold and dramatic statement.
The deep red petals of the dahlias will add a touch of glamour to any room.
You can use a variety of red dahlia’s in this arrangement, including Ball Dahlias, Pompom Dahlias, and this Rock Star Anemone Dahlia.
4. Mixed dahlia Arrangement
Mixed dahlia arrangements are a great way to show off the variety of colors and shapes these flowers come in.
One of my favorite things is to pick dahlias from my garden and mix them in a bouquet. This way, I get a variety of colors and shapes in each bouquet, and the arrangements are always different.

A light and simple dahlia arrangement is perfect for a minimalist décor. This arrangement typically comprises a few dahlias in a simple vase. The dahlias should be in complementary colors, such as white, cream, and pale pink.

However, I say use what you have, what is growing in the garden, or what you find at the grocery store.

Shades of sherbet dahlias are a fun and playful way to display these beautiful flowers. This arrangement is typically made up of dahlias in pastel colors, such as peach, pink, and yellow.
The different shades of the dahlia will create a soft and delicate arrangement.
8. Dinner Plate Dahlias
Dinner Plate Dahlias are the most stunning of the different varieties.
They certainly steal the show with their large, colorful blooms.
Dinner Plate Dahlias come in a variety of colors, including blush, orange, yellow, and pink. A few of my favorite varieties are Café Au Lait, Penhill Watermelon, and Breakout.
9. Pompon Dahlias
Pompon Dahlias are small and round and add great appeal to any arrangement.
These blooms are typically bright colors like red, orange, and yellow. The small size of the dahlias will add a touch of fun and whimsy to any arrangement.
10. Dahlia bouquets
A Dahlia bouquet is a beautiful arrangement of dahlia flowers, often combined with other flowers or greenery.
They can be arranged in various ways, from simple to elaborate, and are often used for weddings, special occasions, and everyday home decor.
Dahlias can last up to a week in a vase with proper care.
Here are some additional things to keep in mind when working with Dahlias as cut flowers:
- Dahlias are best cut when almost fully open but not yet fully mature.
- If you are cutting dahlias for a bouquet, choose flowers that are similar in size and shape.
